ANOTHER DISCOVERY….
The owner of this beautifully simple watercolour got in touch earlier this month to give us details. We had no record of the painting until now, so it was a very exciting discovery. The painting is dated 1985, measures 14”x10” and is of a subject that John painted a number of times capturing the scene in varying light conditions, especially in the winter time when the snow was thick on the ground. Percy Pit was situated to the west of Lemington and was one of several coal pits making up Walbottle Colliery. The pit was closed in 1935, two years after John was born, but the spoil heap remained a prominent local landmark for many decades. The site was later reclaimed and is now the Percy Pit nature reserve.
